It's amazing. Amazing, I tell ya' . . .
. . . the level of ignorance regarding the most basic truths of American governance. Have they stopped teaching U.S. Government in the 12th grade? Wait. Don't answer that . . .
So I was looking for something on YouTube the other day and landed on something different. Looked interesting so I hung around for awhile. Two talking heads - one conservative, the other uninformed - were lobbing the ball back and forth and one of them mentioned Bill Clinton's impeachment. No big deal.
But then I look down at the comments and there's this line from someone named slrs81 who says - get this - Bill Clinton was never impeached, and that this person just makes this stuff up thinking nobody is going to catch it.
What?
So, I respond by saying that Bill Clinton was impeached on December 19, 1998 on two counts - perjury and obstruction of justice. I further explained that impeachment was the equivalent of charging a citizen with a crime, and that after charges of impeachment are brought, the Senate holds a trial to determine guilt. In this case, the president was found not guilty, although I have no idea how, because he did both. But that's D.C.
Anyway, this was the response I got:
"Ummmm, that's like saying someone was on trial for murder and was convicted of murder even though they were acquitted (that means free from criminal charge). Clinton remained in office. That means he WASN'T impeached."
No, really; that's what they wrote - it's a copy-and-paste. I have it right here in my email.
So I figured to come home and try again, but funny thing: all of slrs81's comments have been deleted.
Could it be that there is one human being residing inside the United States that has just learned one of the most elementary facets of how the national government works? I shudder to think what the ramifications may be . . .
